Finding The Wood
Charlie says, “I never
cut a growing tree to get wood.” Along with the adventure of just finding
fallen trees in nature, with the common summer monsoon season throughout Arizona,
it is not uncommon to find many fallen trees due to storm damage. “I
can spot a downed tree from a mile away.” Charlie also works with 2
landscaping firms that know he will pay for trees that they remove if they
deliver them to his workshop.
Favorite Woods
As you will see from the gallery pages, Charlie turns a lot of Mesquite,
which is in abundance in Arizona, and its bright yellow sapwood provides
a great contrast to the very dark brown heartwood. "I also love the
highly figured heartwood of Olive, and turn Maple, Elm, Ash, Ironwood, Eucalyptus,
Sumac, Juniper and Pecan.
The Bowl--
Finish
The finish on the bowls
is simple, no exotic chemicals. Charlie uses Walnut Oil--the same oil
you can buy at your local supermarket.
